Early Life
Jake was born in Marineford also known as the Marine HQ. It is known as the home of the most powerful Marines. His father, Seth Nova, was a custodian at the HQ. Not much is known of Jakes mother who suspiciously “disappeared” once he was born, or so he was told.
Marineford has a city around it where Marine families and workers lived. It was a safe environment due to the presence of all the Marines. Seth was always working trying his best to provide for his son. Meanwhile, Jake grew up on the streets of the town looking for any adventure to keep him occupied. He was a friendly kid who got along with everyone in town. Every night he would wait for Seth to arrive home and cook. Some of Jake’s fondest memories are of his cooking escapades with his father. Seth had to compensate for the missing presence of the boys mother.
At the age of 10, Jake began to work with his father in Marineford. He was astonished by the cold presence of the Marines. Over the next couple of months Jake noticed how serious the Marines took their job. This inspired Jake to become as strong and dedicated as the men and women he saw everyday. One negative characteristic Jake noticed about the Marines was their arrogance. They never stopped and acknowledged him or his father in the time they had working there. It was as if they were invisible, beings whose worth was so low being ignored was justified.
Vice-Admiral Cameron Maybin
Jake noticed there was one Marine that was vastly different from the others. He wasn’t cold, arrogant, condescending or disrespectful. Quite the opposite, he appreciated the work Seth had been doing all these years and would often sit down and talk with him. His kindness would also extend to Jake who looked forward to talking with him everyday. His name was Cameron Maybin, a marine vice-admiral.
Maybin took a liking to Jake and often shared stories about his battles with pirates and how much he had grown to respect the will of the pirate. He told him about how sometimes he coveted the lifestyle they have. Pirates had the freedom to be themselves and be surrounded by nakama who they care for. Jake became obsessed with this “will of pirates”; he began imaging how different life would be out in the ocean instead of being here cleaning up after people who refused to recognize his existence. Jake started paying closer attention to the Pirates that were brought to Marineford. Even though they were caught they had this aura of confidence to them. Jake heard the ridiculous powers some pirates had obtained through devil fruits and was determined to train in order to match this power.
Rokushiki
Over the next couple of weeks Jake desperately trained on the outskirts of Marineford. He didn’t have a devil fruit so he began to train with a sword in hopes of becoming a great swordsman. This dream would soon prove to be difficult. There was no one to show him the way of the sword and he couldn’t possibly teach himself. What Jake didn’t know was that Cameron had been watching his “training” all along. He was inspired by Jakes determination and perseverance that he decided to teach him the fighting style known as Rokushiki. Jake was 11 years old at the time, Cameron’s first priority was to get Jake’s body in optimal shape to handle the vigorous toll of this style. They conditioned for a year and a half every day from 8:00 PM ‘till 12:00 AM. This training was done in absolute secrecy.
Once Jakes body was physically ready, Cameron introduced the fighting style. The first priority was to teach Jake Soru, a technique that allowed the user to move at extremely high speeds. The principle of this attack is kicking the ground several times in the blink of an eye to generate enough power to propel the Jake forward at blistering speeds. Jake began to train his legs extensively in order to increase the fast twitch fibers that allowed this movement.
Then they moved to Tekkai, which required Jake to harden his muscles to negate oncoming attacks. This part of his training was excruciating – Cameron would attack him with powerful blows until his muscles were able to absorb the hit. He was then taught Rankyaku, which allowed Jake to kick a wind powerful enough to pierce opponents. Fortunately, Jake picked up on this rather quickly from his extensive work with the Soru ability.
Then came Geppou and Kami-e. Geppou allowed Jake to jump and kick the air to propel himself higher and is basically a means of flying. While learning this Jake had free-fallen several times from enormous altitudes. Kami-e allowed him to dodge attacks by making his body go limp and floating like paper. This was very difficult for Jake because of his muscular physique. The last technique Jake had to learn was Shigan, a technique that allowed Jake to pierce thinks by moving is fingers at high-speed.
Turning Point
Eight years had passed. Jake was now 19 years old and a skilled user of the Rokushiki style. On January 17th a pirate named Jack Frost had escaped his sentencing and was headed towards the main gates of Marineford. Seeing this the Marine Admiral, Ricky Rubio, used his Yami Yami no Mi abilities and completely obliterated the plaza leading to the entrance. He successfully stopped the fugitive Frost from escaping, but killed the innocents that were in the plaza as well. Among those innocents was Seth, Jakes father.
Jake was emotionally destroyed. He kept replaying the scenario over and over again and couldn’t see why Rubio made the choice he did. Was he really okay with sacrificing innocents in order to recapture one pirate? Jake suddenly realized that this was the nature of the marines, duty first and emotions second. Jake recalled the stories of pirates Cameron use to tell him when he was younger. Most pirates value their nakama and live according to their own will in the freedom of the oceans. Jake had an internal struggle, he worked long enough in Marineford to understand why Rubio had done it, but he also felt betrayed. His father was killed without hesitation in order to follow orders. Was his father’s life less important than simple commands? Before long Jake had realized his destiny was not with the Marines. He longed to live a life not bound by rules where he can be with people that share a common bond and would value each. That night, Jake Nova left Marineford to begin his journey in the majestic seas of the Grand Line.
Illium
Jake arrived o Illium where he met Yamamoto and K who would eventually become his nakama. He also met the Yonkou Allen “Quicksilver” James and his Vice Captain Logan Morrison. The two crews got along well and met at Illium’s famous Tipsys Bar. In the middle of their discussion Kuzan, the marine fleet admiral, appeared with his Vice-Admiral Hippo and ignited a confrontation with Allen and the others. Several small confrontations took place between Allen and Kuzan, LoMo and Hippo, the rookies (Jake, K, Yamamoto) and two marine commodores. Kuzan suddenly realized he was outnumbered and decided to retreat. Allen asked Jake, captain of the Nova Pirates, if he wanted to go on an expedition with his crew to learn a bit on what it truly means to be a pirate. Jake set up a meeting and talked it over with both Yamamoto and K. They all agreed to go along with Allen and company believing this was a great opportunity to learn from the best.
That same night they met Raimon Natsuki, the female Yonkou known as the “Pirate Emperess”, at a party the village had set up to end their festivities with a blast. Natsuki ended up drunk and confronted both Allen and LoMo the next morning, as they were ready to depart. They easily defended against her druken barrage of attacks towards the Makyuri. As she attempted to fly away LoMo shot her down with his laser logia. A man with wings appeared out of nowhere and saved her from falling into the ocean, which would have been her end.
Island "?"
As the Nova and Silver Cross Pirates cruised the ocean, they spotted a small random island a few miles ahead. This was the perfect place to determine who would be the vice-captain of the Nova Pirates. Allen rested as he saw Jake, Yamamoto, and Cool Shades K engage in battle. He was impressed by the skill level of all three rookies and laughed at the ridiculous commentary provided by both JP and LoMo from the ships deck. After the battle K was named vice-captain of the Novas. Jake then realized his crew would benefit more if they began their own journey instead of tagging along with the Silver Cross Pirates. Allen understood the young captains resolve and gave him some advice on what his priorities should be at all times, especially in a world as twisted as their own. The two crews departed the island and sailed their separate ways vowing to see each other sometime in the near future.
Race: Human
List of techinques: Kami-e (紙絵, Paper Drawing) Makes Jake’s body go limp in order to avoid any attacks, and float likes a piece of paper.
Geppou ( 月歩, Moon Step) This allows Jake to jump off the air itself, allowing him to stay in the air for much longer than usual. He can use this technique to cross great distances without ever touching the ground, or set himself up for swift, aerial attacks.
Rankyaku ( 嵐脚, Storm Leg) A powerful projectile technique, in which Jake starts by kicking at very high speeds and strength, sending out a sharp "air blade" that can slice objects and greatly damage a human body. He hasn’t mastered this technique. He is unable to use it when weakened or running low on stamina.
Retro Rankyaku: This technique is the evolved form of the Rankyaku. Once Jake launches one blade he is able to manipulate its movement on its return. Due to the increased velocity and air pressure the Retro Rankyaku is much more potent than the original. Think of it as a boomerang style attack.
Shigan ( 指銃, Finger Gun) This is a close-quarter combat technique, in which Jake pushes his finger into a certain target at a very high speed. Jake’s Shigan cannot actually pierce through flesh yet, making it a powerful blow to the body
Soru ( 剃, Shave) This technique allows the users to moves at extremely high speeds in order to avoid attacks, as well as to attack at higher speeds. The principle of this move was to kick off the ground at least ten times in a blink of an eye. Jake’s Soru is not fully developed. He still has trouble controlling the amount of kicks, which slows him down a bit.
Tekkai ( 鉄塊, Iron Mass) This hardens Jakes muscles to the level of iron, in order to nullify damage taken from attacks. However, it can be broken by strong enough forces. When Tekkai is active, the user is unable to move. Jake hasn’t developed his Tekkai fully -- the strength of Tekkai can vary for users with different physical conditions, as a person with a higher level of muscular strength would be able to take stronger forces with his/her use of Tekkai.
